So, if you find a blog topic that has good traffic potential, low keyword difficulty, and is something you love or know well, it’s probably a great choice for your blog.

Note: This is a solid starting point, especially if you’re new to blogging. But it’s also smart to look at other Ahrefs metrics to make sure your chosen niche has even more potential.

Imagine you’re a travel fan and you know a ton about Singapore and South Korea. You want to write a travel guide but aren’t sure which topic will get more people interested. This is where keyword research comes in.

Start by typing “singapore travel guide” into Keywords Explorer to see what it tells you.

Let’s check out what we found. For the keyword “singapore travel guide” in the U.S., the Traffic Potential (TP) is 250. That’s not super high, actually quite low.

Now, since the Keyword Difficulty (KD) for this keyword is 46, let’s try another one. We’ll search for “south korea travel guide” in Keywords Explorer to see how it compares to the Singapore one.

Here’s what we’ve figured out:

• The Keyword Difficulty (KD) is lower for “south korea travel guide” compared to “singapore travel guide.” That’s a good thing because it means it might be easier to rank for the South Korean travel guide.
• The Traffic Potential (TP) for “south korea travel guide” is way higher at 4.3K, which is like 17 times more potential traffic than the Singapore one. More potential traffic means more people are interested in this topic.

So, if you’re thinking about which travel guide to write, South Korea seems like a better choice. It’s easier to rank for, and more people want to read about it. But keep in mind, it still might take some time to get on the first page of Google.

This method is great when you have a few blog ideas, and you want to pick the one with the most potential.

Now, let’s talk about something important:

making money from your blog. It’s not easy to know exactly how much a website earns unless you own it. But we can estimate the value of pages or whole websites for different keywords using Ahrefs’ tools like Keywords Explorer and Site Explorer.

We use something called “organic traffic value” to get this estimate. It’s like how much money a website would have to pay for the traffic it gets from search engines if it had to buy it with ads.

Here’s a quick way to find the estimated value of a page that shows up for a keyword:

1. Type your keyword into Keywords Explorer. For example, “seoul travel blogs.”
2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page where you see the list of search results.
3. Look on the right-hand side, and you’ll see the estimated value of that page. This gives you an idea of how much money that page could make if it was getting paid for the traffic it gets.

So, it’s like a sneak peek into how profitable different blog topics can be.

If you want to know how much money a competitor’s website might be making from their traffic, you can simply put their website address into Site Explorer. It will give you an estimate of their organic traffic value.

Here’s an example: I typed in the website’s address, and it tells us that they make around $210,000 every month from the traffic they get.

This means the website is probably doing really well and making a good amount of money.

You can also figure out how a blog topic makes money by checking the top search results and seeing how the website owners are making cash.

For example, on the website we checked earlier, we saw that they’re making money through Amazon Associates and Mediavine. They’ve got this info in the footer of their site.

Here’s how we know they’re making money:

• They have a note saying they’re using Amazon, and it’s usually in a disclosure somewhere on the site.
• You’ll also spot the Mediavine logo next to ads on their page.

To use Mediavine, you usually need to have at least 50,000 sessions on your website, so this site is probably making a steady income.

If you want to get even more specific and find websites that are only part of the Amazon Affiliate program in your niche, you can use Ahrefs Web Explorer.

Just copy and paste this special code into Web Explorer, and it’ll give you a list of Amazon Affiliate websites:

You can make your search even more specific by using a filter. For instance, I’ve used a “Page URL” filter to find websites related to Seoul. But you can pick any topic you’re into.

Just remember, finding these websites doesn’t guarantee they’re making money, but it’s a pretty good sign.

Now, let’s talk about developing your blog idea. Once you’ve found a cool niche, it’s time to flesh out your plan.

Here are some things to think about:

1. Main Pages: What are the key pages your blog will have? Think about the big sections.
2. Website Structure: How will your website be organized? What goes where?
3. Questions People Ask: What are the common questions people have about your topic? This can give you ideas for what to write.

Now, to figure out your main pages, you can use the Matching Terms report in Keywords Explorer. Let’s say you’re all about Seoul. You’d use “seoul” as your starting word, and set it to “By parent topic” and “Show as list.” This can help you see the main topics you should cover.

Now, let’s see what the Parent Topics are saying. They’re listed based on how big they are.

Here are a couple of main pages I’ve picked from that list, which can be the core of your blog:

• “seoul food”

These are great topics to build a travel blog around because lots of people are searching for them, as we found out from Keywords Explorer.

Now, let’s talk about how you should set up your website.

To get an idea, you can peek at what your competitors are doing on Google.

Let’s stick with our “seoul travel blogs” idea. Click on the little arrow pointing down in the SERP overview and choose “Overview” from the menu. This will take you to Site Explorer’s Overview report.

Now, when you’re in the Overview report, click on “Site structure.” Then, change “Exact URL” to “Domain.”

After making that change, you can peek at the whole structure of the website that’s ranking #1 for your keyword. It’s like seeing the blueprint of their website.

This trick is pretty awesome because it helps you figure out what’s making other websites succeed on Google.

And if you want to dig even deeper, you can add a “URL” filter to see only the web addresses that have “seoul” in them on that website. It’s like getting a super close look at how they do things.

This helps us figure out how much traffic this keyword brings to that website. It might also give us new ideas for articles we haven’t thought of before.

For example, if we notice that a lot of people are looking for info about Seoul’s food scene, and we know a lot about it, that could be a great topic to cover on our blog.
